mishmash monday

On Saturday, I came out of the grocery store, and could not find my car!  A real senior moment, because the parking lot really isn't all that big ~ only 3 rows.  I kept looking where I remembered parking my car, and was completely perplexed.

Where the heck was my little blue car?

Oh yea!  My car wasn't looking blue that day!

My car is nice and shiny and blue again in the garage right now, thanks to a washing via snow today...but I'm sure it will quickly return to road salt patina in the morning.

tricky t-day ~ walking spins

Still fine tuning our spinning and twirling.  Trying to do it in different contexts for generalization.

Both dogs know how to walk on either side of me, so I decided to have them blend their "heel" trick with the  spinning trick.  Went pretty well.

Chewy loves to heel on my right, and he loves to spin right, so he really, really likes doing this trick combo.

Oreo prefers to face me, but he was a good sport.

tricky t-day

This week we've been working on spins.  I had a surprise snow day yesterday, which gave me time to video.

Oreo already knew spin left/spin right with a hand cue.  I decided to try and teach him how to do it with a verbal cue only.  Oreo relies more on my body language than words.  I think all he hears me say is "blah, blah, blah".

It took us two training sessions to get 'spin left' on a verbal cue.  It was so exciting when his brain clicked and he got it!  Makes me want to go back and retrain every trick he knows with verbal cues only.

Oreo can now go both directions on verbal cue ~ "spin" is counterclockwise, "twirl" is clockwise.  Isn't he brilliant?  Mr. Smartypants.

Chewy is a maniacal spinner in everyday life, and he always spins clockwise.  Every time I bring him to the chiropractor, his neck is stuck in the "turn right" position.  Teaching him to go left is tough, but I think it will be good for his neck if I can get him to do it a few times a day.  Might help us with agility too, because he will not turn left after a jump, instead he spins right and often backjumps.

In this video Chewy is twirling (right) on verbal cue only, and spinning counterclockwise with a strong hand cue.

And here is my first attempt at some double dog twirling (with this duo anyway, I think I did this with Oreo & Misty)  Oreo was doing it on the verbal cue, but Chewy either didn't generalize with me standing up or by adding a partner. We'll keep working on it.

bunny escapade, the sequel

Jeff let the two hooligans out last night for their last potty break before bed.

I'm brushing my teeth and hear Jeff yelling, "CHEWY, CHEWY, CHEWY NO!!!!!"

Had to put my brush down, thinking I had left the gate open and Chewy was taking off down the driveway or something.

I go out, and all I see is Oreo standing on the step staring at me.  He might as well have been saying, "Chewy is being a bad, bad boy.  You need to punish him."

Then, words from the darkness, "Chewy had the rabbit in his mouth!!!!!"

Oh yes.  My little rabbit hunter.

I took my good dog Oreo inside, not wanting to witness any of this.

Later, I got the full story.

Of course, Oreo started the whole thing.  He spotted the rabbit and went into chase mode, growling at the poor creature.  He chased it right under the fence, and if you recall our last bunny escapade, sneaking under the fence didn't bode well for the rabbit.

Apparently, this bunny has been finding plenty to eat this winter.  He got stuck in the fence.

Chewy took advantage of the situation, and started pulling on the rabbit's legs like he was playing tug.

Jeff had to yank Chewy off the bunny, and the bunny squeezed through the fence and hopped away.

Jeff was all worried about the rabbit and told Chewy that he's not allowed to kill our resident animals!

Jeff tells me, "If you see the rabbit hobbling around tomorrow you can blame your dog!"

Of course, I am having a very hard time believing that Chewy could do any harm.

I think he simply was trying to engage the bunny in play.

mishmash monday

Had a rapid thaw this weekend, and a rapid fall by Oreo.  He was running 100 mph, slipped on some ice, and fell in a big pile of slush (he's not injured).   Oreo thinks he shouldn't need a bath for at least a month now!
He was so embarrassed he wouldn't even look at the camera.  I have video of his wipe out, but Oreo is threatening to run away from home if I show it to you.

And then there is my other dog, who has absolutely no cares in the world.    Boy, what I wouldn't give to be him for a day.  He has only two buttons ~ ON and OFF. Here he is in the OFF position.

tricky s-day?

OK, wrong day of the week, but it has been sooooooooooooooo long since I posted any trick videos!  I couldn't wait until TUESDAY to post these.

A friend of mine started a trick training group on facebook, and the first goal for this year was to teach your dog to "shake".

Chewy refuses to shake like a normal dog. He prefers a fancy handshake, like the teenage boys do ~ you know, when they have to do a bunch of funny things with their fingers before they actually shake.  The boys at school have tried to teach me how to do it, but I goof it up every time.

Here is Chewy's "shake":

Of course, Oreo already knows shake.  So, I am teaching him to put his left paw on a book, and raise his right paw, as if he's taking the oath of office. I got this idea from my Aunt Betty.  She emailed me some funny dog photos, and one photo had a dog with his foot on the bible, while raising his paw, confessing to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

We still need to work on duration and fading my hand cue, but we're getting there.  The hard part is keeping the book steady!  Oreo is very patient with me.

new monthly photo series

And a new year begins. This year, I will take my monthly photo from our bridge (as long as our bridge doesn't get washed out again!).

Happy New Year!

Yes, I'll be starting a new photo series today, but for now, join us for a snowy walk.
Wishing everyone a wonderful new year filled with quiet walks, yummy food, and having enough time for play.  Really, what more could we want?
