Happy New Year!

Wishing everyone peace in the New Year.

This is where I find my peace (although I would have preferred quiet, powdery snow):

Chewy thinks this is the best trick..

He's just like a kid...the wrapping paper, tags, and boxes are way more fun than the toy.

misty monday ~ ice storm

Misty survived the historic ice storm of 2008, which shut down school, and left us without power for 3 days, my parents without for 5 days!

Here is Misty taking our trashed backyard all in.

branches that hadn't broken off were hanging VERY low

It did look quite beautiful.

Notice fallen tree in background.

Misty didn't care that we didn't have power.

eventually, the sun came out....

... and our power came back on.

My parents, on the other hand, had to wait a couple more days for their power.  So, they stayed with us.
Misty thought that was the best part of the ice storm.

Happy Holidays!

Wishing all our friends and family a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Heri Za Kwanzaa, or whatever floats your boat.

May you find love, joy, and enough money left in your wallet to pay your internet bill in the New Year!

tricky t-day ~ conehead tricks

Well, I was hoping to have a trick mastered by this week.

Alas, we've mastered nothing.  I'm blaming it on the neutering, painting and holiday baking.

So here are some videos of tricks we have yet to master.  Obviously, I haven't mastered cleaning my living room either!

OK, I could have taken the cone off to work on tricks, but it wouldn't have been as amusing. The cone seemed to make Chewy even nuttier about doing tricks. Here is an unedited video of us working on raising diagonal legs (one front, one back opposite sides). It is hard to see him lifting his back leg, but if you check out the floor you'll see only one leg down. We are also working on "bow".
If you're interested, here is the video I submitted of Oreo to Sylvia. It shows Oreo's diagonal legs, and our beginning attempts at "penguin" (where the dog is in a beg position, but steps forward). The penguin is hard for Oreo, because he is so serious about his beg position. We're getting about one step now and again, with me moving the treat to the side.
Here is Silvia's response to our video: Cool, you are sure getting lots of movement in a sit up now! Maybe it’s time to try it on normal floor now, might be easier to get a real step there. He seems to understand it’s about hind feet by now, so going to the normal floor might make the continuation easier. Great diagonal too, you are doing a great job seeing the two legs up with all that fur! Time to start working on duration. Very nice 4on too, you can make it even higher!

She's too kind.

misty monday~bones

Misty says, "Hey!  You little brat!  I'm in the middle of chewing on that bone."

"OK, since you're only a baby, I'll let you have that one.  I'm sure there's another one around here somewhere.  MOM!!!!!"

"Don't even think about taking this one you spoiled rotten brat!"

"Good boy.  I may let you be my friend if you stop stealing my stuff."

"Hey pal, aren't these yummy?"

ball holder

Chewy loves his new ball holder.

quick update!

Chewy did great at his neutering surgery.  He was up and walking the minute he hit the recovery room.  He even got a Certificate of Bravery!

Gee, they never gave Oreo one of those!

Painters were back yesterday.  This time, they actually had to go into the room where Oreo was crated (we were not anticipating that).

Again, Oreo did super. After I got home, I had Oreo out of his crate when one of the painters came in the room, and Oreo simply stood there watching him.  Usually, Oreo would run into the nearest corner and cower.  Of course, I was throwing him treats, but still.

Maybe I will make Oreo his own certificate of bravery, because he certainly deserves it.

wordless wednesday (not!)

Someone had to get neutered today!  I was trying to hold out until Chewy was at least 12 months, since the new research indicates it is beneficial to hang onto those hormones until the growth plates are closed.

Made it to nine months, but I couldn't let this go on any longer!

Wish me luck keeping Chewy "quiet" during recovery.  There will be none of this.....
....for a few days.  Ugh.  Who is going to wear Oreo out?

Yes, we have some snow!

We had painters at our house all day yesterday while we were at work.  I put Oreo and Chewy in crates in our bedroom before they arrived.  Gave Oreo a moderate dose of xanax, and hoped he didn't spend the day a complete wreck.

I expected to come to a basket case of a dog, but Oreo seemed almost normal.   Came right out of his crate, went on a relaxed walk, played ball and I didn't have to click/treat him all the way to the living room after the scary men left.  Pretty cool.  I felt as though we made some progress.  A few months ago, it would have taken hours for him to come out of his safe place.

tricky t-day ~ hup

One of the tricks we are working on for Silvia's class is the prerequisite steps for the 'jumping up on my feet trick' (where I'm lying on my back, feet in the air, and the dog will jump and stand on my feet).  I've always wanted to try this trick, and have seen it taught many ways.

We are training it by having the dog jump on higher/narrower/less stable objects gradually.

After a week, this is our result.  I find it amazing that dogs can jump up on objects way higher than their heads. I know I couldn't do that, even with a running start.  Could you?

I'm anxious to see what Silvia says about putting their front paws on the box first. She may want them jumping straight up.

Hoping to have another one of our tricks mastered by next week.  We'll see.

tricky t-day ~ skater boy

At one time, I had quite the obsession with skater boys.

Now, I'm trying to relive those days through my dogs!

This trick is a work in progress.  Neither Oreo nor Chewy are truly "skating", but I feel as though Oreo is sooooo close.  Chewy is also on his way, but would make more progress if he didn't keep offering me all his tricks.  Secretly, I love when he does that, because I know he is trying to figure out what I want, because what do all teachers want?  We want everyone to try their best.
Got our first trick list for Silvia's advanced tricks class yesterday!  One trick we are well on our way to achieving.  One should be doable.  The third, well, I think we will need Silvia's help.  Fun stuff though! Oreo was very excited to start doing some new stuff.

misty monday~snow

One of my all time favorite photos of Misty. I love the way she is gazing up at the falling snow. She loved being outside in the winter.

Misty says, "Ahhhh, life is good."

tricky t-day ~ 2o/2o

Chewy has been in an agility foundations class for the past 4 weeks.  Fun!  There is a blue merle sheltie in our class, who Chewy loves to play with. So cute!

It is a homework intensive class, not leaving much time for other "tricks".

Last class, no matter what skill we were working on, Chewy would find something, somewhere to do a 2o/2o.  It was hysterical. I was trying to get him to go thru  jump poles, but he was running up and down the dogwalk, doing contacts instead.  I was sending him to a table on the ground, and he would 2o/2o, waiting for his release word.

He does the same thing at home, on railroad ties, boxes, you name it....always hoping to be rewarded.

Right now, we are mostly working on holding the position and rewarding while I move around.

I don't take training seriously. I'm not sure if we will ever trial, nor do I really care.  I am simply thrilled that Chewy enjoys the classes and activities.  He pretty much thinks everything is a party.

Here's a video of Chewy's silly contact antics.

2o/2o from Sara on Vimeo.

I bring Oreo to all of Chewy's classes.  I've been giving Oreo the option of staying in the car, or coming in the building with us.  He has chosen the car every time!  I'm hoping that allowing him to "choose" will help Oreo understand that I'm not going to ask him to do things that make him uncomfortable.  Maybe, someday, he'll want to get out.  Right now, he's enjoying the car ride.

I am signing Oreo up for Silvia Trkman's  advanced tricks distance class.  Oreo LOVES to train, and I feel at a loss for new tricks.  Taking the class will give me some new ideas, and keep me motivated to do some consistent training with him.  Hopefully, in a few weeks, Oreo will have some new tricks to show you!

misty monday

Here is Misty being, well, Misty. Watching these old videos, I can still remember how her face felt in my hands. She was a sturdy ol' girl.

Happy Thanksgiving!

"Please!  Throw us some turkey!  We'll catch it in our mouths!"

I'm thankful for these two hooligans, and for all my readers who love them just as much as I do.

tricky t-day~ lion tamer

This week, the trick was on Chewy.  He had his first encounter with a cat.   Cute, itsy bitsy Sasha, duped Chewy every time.

misty monday ~blooper reel

I was trying to teach Oreo how to jump in my arms, this is the blooper reel.  I love Misty in this video.  It is so her.

She was so patient when Oreo and I were doing stuff.

tricky t-day ~ sing

This trick Chewy does with perfection. Love when Oreo joins in (around the 35 second mark).

Do you think he was serenading Heidi Klum?

Don't tell Chewy, but I think Oreo has a much better voice.

october snow storm

We do!

We got about 6 inches at our house.   Chewy really seemed to like playing in the white stuff.  Although, he got a bit annoyed when it balled up on his legs. Luckily, it warmed up quick, which cured that problem.

Jeff got to play with his new toy!

This afternoon, we took a walk in the snowy woods.   It wasn't too deep in there, because the trees create a natural canopy.
And of course, Chewy had to bury his head.

Luckily, we, and most other people in our area, didn't lose power. Always a risk when it snows while leaves are still on the trees. Tomorrow, we'll have to put away the shovel, and bring the rake back out!

Chewy's First Snow!

OK, I admit, I've been anxiously awaiting Chewy's First Snow! However, I wasn't expecting it to arrive before I put the garden hoses away.

Most of this batch melted during the day, but the weather people say round two is up for tomorrow.  4-8 inches.  Not good when we still have lots of leaves on the trees.  Fingers crossed everyone keeps their power on.

Chewy was loving the snow right away.  He didn't love his jacket, but began to tolerate it once he realized he could MOVE while wearing it. He's too funny.
He LOVES eating the snow.

Now we know what our new house looks like with snow!
