Happy New Year

Christmas Eve was such a warm day that we had our appetizers out on the deck!
"This weather is hilarious!"

Oreo got his own chair, Chewy did not.
Polish feast

But he did get to nap on Grannie's couch.

Took a little trip to NYC the day after, and this guy reminded me of Mr. Chewy.

Happy New Year!

Wishing everyone the best of health and lots of sunshiny days to spend with their puppies.

balmy morning

It was 63 degrees at 7 am this Christmas Eve morning!  We are breaking a record for the latest we have ever gone without snow in the season.  Gotta love El Nino (unless you're a skier).  We may have to eat our appetizers on the deck this evening.

No hat or gloves necessary on our early morning walk.  We tried to stay near the creek as much as possible, because it was cooler there!

"I'm hot!  Wish I had some snow to roll in!"

We've had some rain so the creek was flowing really good.
Wishing everyone a lovely, peaceful Christmas.

extra hour

Instead of teaching today, I went to a conference. Lucky me, we got out an hour early! I had planned on doing some errands on my way home, but the sunshine and extra time made me change my mine. I ran home, and threw the dogs in the car so we could take a nice hike before the sun went down (which it seems to do mighty quickly this time of year).

We were the only ones at the preserve (except for a state trooper sitting in his car in the parking lot, not sure what that was all about, but I gave him a wave and went on my way).
"Let's go mom!"
The dogs are wondering who is this strange person standing next to them?
"That person has REALLY long legs mom!"

We hadn't been to the preserve in months, so there was A LOT of sniffing to catch up on.   Since this was a bonus walk, and I wasn't worried about losing daylight, I let them sniff as much as they wanted.

There was a bit of mud in places, but no worries when you stick right next to your brother.
This bridge should look familiar!
Such a peaceful walk.  We stopped a few times just to LISTEN.  There were some interesting noises coming from the pond, but mostly pure silence.

Amazing how an unexpected hour of free time can change your whole day!

dyken pond

This morning we went hiking at Dyken Pond with my dad.  Haven't been there in over 10 years or so. The trail map is quite extensive, but I wanted to try the boardwalk path because I had seen photos of the trail on someone else's blog.

The beginning of the trail was filled with evergreens and thick moss.  It felt like we were in the Adirondacks.

We quickly came upon our first "board walk".  More like walking on boards than a boardwalk!  It was a bit tricky in spots.
We had to maneuver ourselves over a very narrow patch of land across a swamp, more rickety boards, and then came upon this pretty little stream.

We saw this sign, and were a bit confused by it, since we didn't see a boardwalk around.
However, we did see the beaver activity!   Can you spot it?
We had some problem solving to do on the trail...such as over or under trees.  The dogs usually chose over, but Chewy wasn't so sure he wanted to find his own way down off this tree.

"I'll just wait here until I'm rescued, thank you."
We finally reached the long boardwalk I had seen in photos, but we weren't going to be able to cross it today.  Damn beavers.  Now the "beaver detour" made sense.
So we had to back track a bit.

Afterward, we drove down to the actual pond area.  We saw a sign that says you can rent a canoe there for a mere $10.

No one was around or on the pond.  It was very quiet.

But Oreo kept an eye out for people just in case.

The sign at the beginning of the trail said we might see bears, bobcats, porcupines, moose and fox.  We didn't see any of those, but we did see a pileated woodpecker.  They are always fun to spot.

We will have to go back and explore some of the other trails.

mine

Chewy says, "I've got a box that has my name written all over it!"

Oreo says, "Big deal....There are COOKIES with MY name on all over them."

(their eyes look so scary!  why wont someone come up with "red eye corrector" for dogs' eyes?)

namesake

I saw this at Target over weekend, and really wanted to buy it, considering Chewbacca is our dog's namesake. Plus, I thought it would be quite entertaining to bring it home!  Just think of the photo ops.

But, I couldn't justify the $100 price tag (even though he did talk when you pushed his belly).

Do you see the resemblance?  Funny how I was dead set on naming him Twix, until Jeff said, "He looks like Chewbacca."  Can't imagine calling him anything else now (except "Taz" for Tasmanian devil)

turkey comas

I think the dogs are anxious for me to go back to school so they can get some much needed rest after all the hiking, playing, sunbathing and turkey!

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend!  Chewy and Oreo sure did.

dogs like leftovers too

Especially when the leftovers were made by their favorite food lady.

Yes, I know, these foods are not really the best for dogs....but hey, they live short lives and Thanksgiving only comes around once a year.

Strangely, they didn't bark their heads off when they were done, demanding their after dinner cookie like they do every other night.

Maybe they were expecting a slice of pie to end up in their bowl too?

More likely, they didn't recognize this as "dinner", and were probably expecting their kibble to show up later!

magic place

I wanted to get a lot of hiking in with the dogs this Thanksgiving weekend.  Wednesday, thursday, friday....perfect hiking weather!

On Saturday it was raining.

So we went to a magical place called Kinderhook Creek Preserve where, for some reason, it never rains. Every time I go there, it can be raining on our drive there and way home, but never at the preserve.  It must be our reward for having to hike up really, really steep cliffs.  I chose a new path today and it was even steeper.  Luckily I was going up, because the only way down would've been on my butt. Even the dogs struggled.  Don't think I'll ever take that trail again, unless I take some rock climbing lessons.

Despite the pre-winter bleakness, the creek never disappoints.

Chewy is being really careful on this rock, because on a previous trip he ended up taking a swim by mistake.

Here's the rock Mr. Chewy thought he could walk down to get a better sniff at the water:

And one second later, he was a wet dog.

The dogs are unimpressed with our Charlie Brown Christmas tree this year.

five photos day 5 (two months later!)

Hello?  Is anyone there?

Yes, we're still here!  On summer break, being lazy after one of the most stressful school years ever.

Chewy is still a clown, loving his trips to the park to see his friends, and crashing into walls while he spins down the hallway to the kitchen (really have to get that on video one of these days).

Oreo is still my scaredy dog, although he is tolerating an occasional walk with a lady we met at the park and her dog.  The dog ignores him, and the lady has a really sweet, soft voice, so he's ok with them.

Our day goes...breakfast, park, playtime, mommy yoga time (naptime), lunch, hammock, playtime, dinner, playtime, water plants (attack hose game), snacktime, naptime, bedtime snack, sleep....repeat.

Oreo has been sleeping so well that he often barks in his sleep!

Pretty much heaven.

I'm so lucky and grateful to have this extended break to recharge and bond with my puppies.  If it weren't for summer break, I really think I'd be looking for a new career right now.

Hope everyone else is enjoying their summer!  We'll try to post again before it's over!
