tricky t-day ~ chewy rollup

Chewy pretty much has the roll up in a blanket trick!  So proud of him.

At the beginning of the month, I really didn't think both dogs would get it.  In fact, I wasn't even sure one of them would.  I love it when they surprise me with their brilliance.

Next week, fingers crossed, Chewy will have a brand new trick to show you, and I'm working on a variation of it with Oreo (who already knew the trick).

mishmash monday

Back to school today after a week off......kids will be half dead until lunch, then it will seem like we never had a break at all!

an odorous situation

Last Friday before school, I was walking the dogs through the woods when I saw a little critter walking ahead of us.  A critter who looked a lot like a skunk.

Friday was the day of my classroom observation.  An observation that had been rescheduled twice due to snow days.  All I could think was...I'm going to have to reschedule again, because I'm gonna get sprayed by a skunk.  Who would believe that?

I kept a good distance, and nervously (OK, I was freaking out) made my way home, unscathed.

Then, the past two mornings when I let the dogs out, the skunk has been walking our fence line.  This morning, Chewy was within 10 feet of him, and following the skunk's every move!

Flower was moseying along without a care in the world.

Really? The mad, barking, lunatic dog doesn't scare you, or at least pick up your step a little?

Oh yes, Flower knows that only dogs are dumb enough to try and get close to him.

According to Wikipedia, all other species know better ~"Most predatory animals of the Americas, such as wolvesfoxes and badgers, seldom attack skunks, presumably out of fear of being sprayed. The exceptions are dogs, reckless predators whose attacks fail once they are sprayed".

Reckless.  Yup.

I was screaming my head off, rattling the treat jar, running back and forth (without shoes!), trying everything to get Chewy away from the fence (while still keep myself a mile away from the skunk).

Apparently, in the past two days, Chewy has gone deaf, and can no longer hear me.

What was I thinking, getting him the "skunk" chase it toy?????  Nothing like teaching your dog to chase a skunk on a rope, and grab its tail!  Brilliant Sara.

I read that skunks do not spray other skunks, so I am not worried about Oreo, who is practically a relative.

I am worried about the reckless, deaf one.

If it weren't for our fence, I know my wild one would be living in our garage right now.

Time to prepare for the worst.

Everything I know about skunk odor removal I learned from The Brady Bunch. Not necessarily a good source.

My vet gave me a skunk bath recipe.  I went out and purchased plenty of ingredients.

I thought I'd share it, in case any of you are ever in need of removing noxious fumes from you beloved reckless predator:

SKUNK BATH RECIPE
-2 TBLS Dawn dish soap
-1/2 cup baking soda
-2 bottles of peroxide

Let sit 10 minutes before rinsing out. (Hopefully that doesn't mean the reckless one has to sit for ten minutes, because that isn't happening).

Hopefully I never have to use it.

mishmash monday

Jeff almost got us kicked off the mountain.   The hay was supposed to stop our momentum, but he figured out a way to get us flung into the road.  Good thing there was a net there to catch us.

He was a little bit slower with my nephews on board.

tricky t-day ~ chewyroll

Still working with Chewy on roll up in a blanket. Getting close to a solid roll over.

I'm having trouble getting him to hold the towel without swatting it with his front paw (that's from a trick we did way back...pick up something with your mouth, then hug it).

Despite the chaos, I have confidence that he is going to get it!  Stay tuned....

Oreo is unimpressed.
I told Oreo's behaviorist about his latest roll up in a blanket trick, and she said, "Maybe you could teach him to carry the blanket over his head when you go places, that way he'll think no one can see him." She wasn't really joking! I think she's realized that I'm more apt to work on fun tricks with him, rather than boring behavior modification stuff.  Poor dog.

skunk in a blanket

We are soooooo close to getting this trick.  All I have left is to get Oreo to pick up the blanket on his own.

Love my little trickster.

tricky t-day

I've been trying to teach Oreo how to roll up in a blanket since 2010! It simply is one of the cutest tricks out there.
click here for our previous attempt

Well, roll up in a blanket is our trick goal for this month.

Ricky's mom suggested trying it with something small, like a wash cloth, instead of the blanket.

Well....voila!  Oreo got it right away.  I was so excited!

Yesterday, Oreo actually did roll himself up in a blanket, and I jackpotted him. But then, he wouldn't do it again.  I'm hoping his brain was just fried, and not that the trick scared him. I'll go back to the towel, maybe  a hand towel, for our next few sessions before trying with the blanket again.  He doesn't usually get scared about tricks, so I'm hoping his brain was just tired.

Chewy still has a long way to go on this one.  He's still learning "roll over" (which he is really clutsy & dramatic about) and "hold".  Hopefully he's paying attention to Smarty pants Oreo.

saturday spinning

OK, it seems as if we've spent a whole month on spinning tricks.  I must say, I'm a bit dizzy.

This week's trick was "grab bag".  I decided to teach the dogs to spin on a perch.  This one was pretty easy for Oreo, since he has had lots of practice spinning on his peanut physio ball.  Chewy had some trouble making the complete turn without falling off, but he got it in the end.

Chewy is also getting close to being able to do a  verbal only cue on spin left ~ his unnatural turning direction.  I'm pretty proud of him for that.  I think it must be like forcing a right handed person to write with their left hand; they can do it, but it feels wrong.

I know Chris is going to ask, where is the video of ME spinning on the perch.  I was going to try, but was afraid I'd break the box!  Believe me, I spent many years spinning on the 4inch balance beam, I know I could do it (with some practice).

february

January 1st
We had a brutal cold spell for about a week, and I took a photo on Jan. 28, right before the warm front blew through.  Water does some pretty amazing things in the winter, and I didn't want to miss this shot!

After the brief 58 degree thaw, here is February:
