rocky or roberta?

Yesterday morning, I went out with my camera to see if I could spot "Rocky".

Can you see him?

How about now?

Hmmmmm, I think this might be "Roberta" not "Rocky" raccoon.  Do you see an extra little nose?

Mama saw me getting closer, and pushed the baby's head down with her paw.

After work, I grabbed my camera and crept slowly to the tree in hopes of spotting the baby again.

Instead, I saw this!

I guess it got a little too hot in the knot, or perhaps mama was simply in need of a break.  She was out there like this for hours!

You can tell from this photo that she's a nursing mama!  And hey ~she grew her tail back!

After dinner, I went back to check on her.

And saw this:
And then this!  I think this is the baby!
These are a bit blurry, because they were very active and I had low light to deal with, but you can see the two little faces.

Funny, if I had never seen her hanging out of the tree like Winnie the Pooh looking for honey, I never would've noticed her at all!  She really camouflages herself well, plus she's really high up.

This tree is outside our fence line, so no worries about run ins with the dogs.
"Instead of taking photos, what do you say you put a hammock up here for me?"

exploded tree & a bear

The other day Jeff was gazing out the window and said, "Look at that tree!  It looks like it exploded!"

It did.  There were pieces of splintered wood everywhere.

My explanation was an old fallen tree got stepped on by a deer who crushed the log into a bunch of pieces.

Of course, I was wrong.

I was also wrong about seeing a bear trying to climb into the knot of a tree.  Jeff assured me that a bear couldn't fit in that hole, even if it was a BABY bear.

I wasn't convinced.  I saw 2 little black legs flailing out of that knot - no visible tail.  What else could it be?  I've read Winnie the Pooh, and he got stuck in tree knots (and many other places) trying to get honey.
Clearly, it was a baby bear.

Jeff said, "Well, then, where is its mamma?"

I said, "I don't know.  I ran in the house as soon as I saw it was a bear!"  Duh.

Alas, I was wrong.

Found out the truth a few days later when I looked up and saw raccoon eyes peeking at me from inside the knot.

Obviously, it is some sort of freakish TAILLESS raccoon.  Right?

Then, I remembered that one of Oreo & Chewy's favorite toys is this!

We've been playing with his tail for YEARS!  I better watch my back.

Oh well, the little critter has made quite the storybook home for itself.  Hopefully he forgives me.

Anyhoo, back to the exploded tree.

Last night, right before snack time, Jeff saw a big bird in our side yard.  He thought it was a turkey.

This time, I knew what it was!  A pileated woodpecker.  Pecking away at that shattered log.  We had found our culprit.

He/she is pretty darn cool, but boy he can sure make a mess.

sweet babies

This little one seems to be a bit adventurous.  We're going to put some cushions down on the ground below the nest....just in case.

I'm missing my baby niece Sabine, who died eleven years ago today. I can still remember what it felt like to hold her in the little nest I made with my arms.    She was the most beautiful baby, who never got the chance to try and fly.

I'm also missing my Tomato DAD.   I know he would have loved to see these photos.  He's the one who inspired me to become a "birder".  Maybe these little guys are a gift from him.  They sure do make me smile.

bird tricks

OK, I promise I'll post something "dog" tomorrow, but today, one more bird post.

This wren is quite smart and determined, and I think she may be almost as smart as my dogs....

Monday Mother

Look real close and you will see baby beaks!

Jeff lifted me up so I could get a good peek!  Look......

Maybe I need to start a bird blog.....

new tennants

After years of neglect, a family has finally moved into the lobster shack!

The male bird keeps an eye out while mama bird is inside working hard.
The supervisor

I've had this bird house for years, and the only thing to ever take up residence were bees!  Now, after years of weathering, it is falling apart and I get a bird family.

Geez, does this make me a slum lord?

mishmash monday

As you all know, Oreo loves the hammock.  He is an expert at snoozing away an afternoon outside.
Chewy, on the other hand, is not a big fan, as he jumped on the hammock one too many times when I wasn't on it.  This resulted in him being flung across the yard.

Usually, I find him UNDER the hammock while Oreo & I are on it.

Yesterday, Chewy decided to brave this hammock thing again.  He hopped up all on his own.

This time I had treats in my pocket!  He decided to help himself.

After the treats were scarfed down (in a nano second), Chewy stayed, relaxed a little bit and took in the view.
He did that "I'm just going to rest my eyes for a second" move.
And finally, he gave in to the whole lazy hammock way of life.

Shhhhh....puppy is sleeping.  Hope he keeps joining us.  I like being able to keep an eye on him.  After all, he did eat a cough drop yesterday.  Chewy's goodmorningkisses were a bit menthol flavored on Sunday.

tricky t-day ~ taking a break

Although, I really want to teach Oreo to jump rope.  Still looking for a regular jump rope.  All the ones I've found are fancy - light up, sparkly, hard plastic - where, oh where, are the jump ropes of my youth?

mishmash monday

I'm really, really, really, really excited about this!
We're trying to avoid using our side door, so Mrs. Robin can incubate in peace.  She spends most of her day there.  Fingers crossed that all goes well, and one morning we will wake up to some crying babies!

Oreo is doing his part too.  He keeps an eye out for any potential intruders.
Can you see her?
