wordless wednesday (not!)

Someone had to get neutered today!  I was trying to hold out until Chewy was at least 12 months, since the new research indicates it is beneficial to hang onto those hormones until the growth plates are closed.

Made it to nine months, but I couldn't let this go on any longer!

Wish me luck keeping Chewy "quiet" during recovery.  There will be none of this.....
....for a few days.  Ugh.  Who is going to wear Oreo out?

Yes, we have some snow!

We had painters at our house all day yesterday while we were at work.  I put Oreo and Chewy in crates in our bedroom before they arrived.  Gave Oreo a moderate dose of xanax, and hoped he didn't spend the day a complete wreck.

I expected to come to a basket case of a dog, but Oreo seemed almost normal.   Came right out of his crate, went on a relaxed walk, played ball and I didn't have to click/treat him all the way to the living room after the scary men left.  Pretty cool.  I felt as though we made some progress.  A few months ago, it would have taken hours for him to come out of his safe place.

The breeder Tucker came from told me to wait till 1 year of age as well or longer. I have always neutered or spayed by 6 months. I'm going to see if we make till 7 or 9 months but I have an issue. Tucker had a rear dew claw come back....it's not attached to the bone yet but if I wait too long it could or will. I wanted to have it removed when he is neutered.

I'm sure if you keep Chewy from going out with Oreo at the same time for potty breaks or put him on a leash so he can't run around, he will be okay.

Oh no poor Chewy! Mommy said thanks for sharing the info about waiting til he's 1 year old, she will keep an eye out on Benji, if things get out of control she might have to do the snip snip too.

Chewy's growth plates are probably closed by now since he is 9 months. It should be ok. Dont worry about it. Yea for Oreo and you , all that hard work is paying off!!!

Sending good wishes to Chewy--get well soon! And I laughed out loud at work at the first image!

Happy to hear that Oreo is doing so well. Since I'm a recent reader of your blog I had no idea he had fear issues. He seems perfectly well adjusted!

I always heard that if you neuter too soon, they wont get their whole size and the development is off.

Still Bert was neutered at 5 months and he is the biggest golden retriever I have seen in a long time.

So we don't know what is right or wrong. Good luck..

First photo needed no words - LOL! I too think Chewy will be fine at 9 months. Congratulations to Oreo on such a good job with the workmen and on surviving Chewy's teenage hormones!

That's terrific! Good for you and Oreo. I don't think my dog, Shiva, could handle something like that so well. Not yet anyway. Last year when the landlords were replacing our windows downstairs, she was a mess when I got home. I'd put her in her crate in the room farthest away, with her favourite frozen Kong stuffings, but it didn't help. Ever since, I've arranged to be home if anyone is coming to do any work. It's just easier.

I hope Chewy's surgery goes well!

Yay Oreo!! Such a brave boy! It's such a relief when something I thought would scare Kona for days ends up being no big deal.

Oh Chewbac..the time has come...you will romp again, although sitting still sure isn't fun. Maybe you and Oreo are in for extra treats! ;)

Oh Chewy, didn't you know what that behavior would cost you?? Well, I sure hope you're feeling much better now. Oreo, Kudos to you! Doing much better I see. The world really isn't that scary, sweetie.

Oh, poor Chewy! Hopefully the road to recovery is short and uncomplicated.

We've been told to try to hold out until Kuster is two years old if we can. So far, he's been alright and I am hoping that we'll make it!
