tricky t-day ~ hug

Oreo learned how to "hold a bunny" a few months ago. Part of Silvia's class is teaching the dogs to hold a plastic bottle. We started out by hugging a pole. Chewy LOVED this, but got a bit too enthusiastic and turned into a wanna be pole dancer. I swear he was climbing the pole. So, I switched to a broom, which seemed to stop that behavior, and he was able to "hold".

He's been doing real well with holding the bottle, but the session I recorded he was not holding it as long as usual. I've been doing trick training first thing in the morning, but shot this video one afternoon. He's like my ninth graders...good in the morning, but after lunch, forget about teaching them a thing.

What I've learned most from this class is not to rush things.  I know I often resorted to luring with Oreo, because I wanted to have him master tricks quickly.  With Chewy, I've taken things slower, used more shaping, and the end result (when we finally get there) is much better.  More independence.

We'll get there with this one too.

Chewy is doing great! I totally know what you mean about rushing things - I did/do the same thing with Ricky. Glad Silvia's class has been so helpful. Some day I'll try again with a puppy and it will be so much fun!

I love your area rug, btw!

Hi Y'all,

Being a retriever, I'll shake or high five, but if you show me ANYTHING that can go in my mouth...need I say more? I retrieve! I'll pick it up, hand it to you, anything you want...but hole it in my paws? naw!

Y'all come by now,
Hawk aka BrownDog

Is Oreo right pawed and Chew left pawed?

Oreo did great holding the bottle. He sure was making the rounds around the table. Chewy looks like he's off to a good start. Keep up the great work boys!

I REALLY need to get back into doing tricky t-day with you guys! :)

They are so bright!!! I can't believe you can train one at a time. I get bark, bark, bark from teh one who isn't getting enough attention.

What a cute trick- your boys are so attentive! It amazes me how fast Chewy grew- he's about Oreo's size already!

I laughed out loud when Chewy did the paw cross instead of what you wanted, he has gotten sooo big!

I also love that he isn't losing his feisty personality!

Looks good! Love Sylvia, such a great trick. Great for body awareness. Love to see the wheels turn as they figure these things out!

I'm finally here! My human is helping me do this comment using her new software that types for her as she speaks, so she can rest her arms from her RSI – it's not bad, huh? But it does still make mistakes and my human has to keep stopping to correct it so it's a bit annoying and very slow – it takes us double the time to do the same thing! So please excuse any funny words or spellings in my comment!

That is such a cool video! Wow, Oreo and Chewy – you are both such smart pups! Everytime my human comes here, she gets inspired to teach me new stuff. I can see that you were both doing lots of great "cross paws" too! I'm getting a little bit better with that but it's still going to take me a while. I think I would like to learn this hold/hug trick too but I don't know if it would confuse me more at the moment because it's a bit similar to the cross paws action. Anyway, we love watching you learn! And we can't believe how big Chewy has grown, since we haven't been able to visit for a while!

Slobbers,

Finally getting a chance to read up on older blog posts. Chewy did great with holding the broom. He and Oreo must be very helpful in cleaning and sweeping the new house. (Oh, and I saw the comment you wrote on my blog about all those mosquitos, ants, bugs all over your place -- sorry to hear about it -- hope the weather gets nicer and the bugs decide to relocate.) Do you know I just noticed that the bridge in NJ/PA has bug zappers -- I never noticed them before -- but I guess mosquitos are everywhere. I wonder if mosquitos have to pay tolls too to get across the bridge! :)
