tricky t-day ~ frog legs

Part of Chewy's distance puppy class has been learning the "frog leg" stretch.  Much easier to teach Chewy than Oreo, since Chewy still splays his rear legs out like a frog occasionally.  However, Oreo has been catching on, and knows what to do now.  Chewy will do it on a verbal cue alone, Oreo still needs a slight lure.  I think Oreo will get there in a few more sessions.

Here is a bit of them learning, and the finished product.  It is hard to see Oreo's stretch, because of all his hair, but watch for his white paws.

What do you use the frog leg stretch for? Is this sort of physical therapy?

It's a good strectch to get them warmed up for agility.

So cool that this is a trick! I had no idea. Shiva just does it naturally. Perhaps I need to capture it and put it on a cue!

Very cute - I love all the tricks you teach the two of them! :-)

I love the song and of course, the two clever boys!!
Eva is always froggy legged so no point teaching her!

How did you get Oreo to understand to splay his legs out? I tried getting Ricky to do it and all he did was crawl. It's a very cute trick and Oreo is really getting it! (of course Chewy makes a darling frog!)

Love, love, love the Kermit song and your editing! Just so cute!

Ricky,
It was hard. Putting them on the pillow makes it easier. I clicked for any movement of his legs first. If he moved forward into a crawl, I had him reset himself. It took many sessions to get him to understand. He still does it best on the pillow.

Also, holding the treat close to his nose helped. If you pull it too far away, they crawl.

I like the cartoon frogs on the video -- nice! Sing it Kermit!!!

Bailey has always done the froggy thing without teaching. Katy never has tried it.

This is awesome. Murph does it naturally, so I will start to capture and reward it. Mack might take a little work. We really love seeing all your tricks. It's amazing how quick your pups learn!

ALL RIGHT OREO!!! That was easy to see him doing it!!!! I was so excited when I got Cricket and Liz to finally be able to do that stretch, that is why it is so cool you got to start so young with Chewy-sure seems easier then!

Chewy has the hang of that qute well, he is growing fast too, how is he coping with the heatwave you have over there?

Sara said...

He's coping fine. Did all his craziness indoors for a few days. Luckily, a cold front has moved in, and we are back to our pleasant summer weather.

Ha ha ha! I always thought that some dogs could just do it or not. I had no idea you could teach them to do that!
