moody monday?

We're in a good mood this Monday! It's President's Week.....a week off from school!

Although, poor Oreo is a bit out of commission with a cracked/split paw pad. Hopefully it heals up quick. Trying to keep him from running, jumping, leaping is quite impossible.

You might be moody but it looks like Oreo is not. I hope his foot gets better soon. Maybe put a footie on that foot when he goes out into cold. I hope you have something to put on that paw. It is probably really dry. Helen

You guys get a week off from school? Here kids only get one day for President's Day! But considering all the snow we're supposed to get, they will probably get tomorrow off too.

Enjoy your week!

Hope Oreo's pad heals quickly. Ever try Musher's Secret? My neighbor uses it for her Westie and it works well.

I just ordered Musher's Secret to prevent future problems. Glad to hear it works for her.

I've been using emt gel to close the cut, and that stuff is like superglue. Amazing.

Presidents' WEEK??? Even when I was a banker we only got one day off...well...back in the "olden days" we got two separate days off, one for Washington and one for Lincoln. I used to LOVE February back then! LOL!

that's awesome that you get a whole week off! And trust me, I know it's not easy keeping dogs from jumping, running, etc. Especially when agility is their job! Have a great week off- what a treat!

thank heavens those pad things seem to heal quickly, suprisingly quickly, so heres wishing quick healing thoughts for Oreo-what sort of wild things was he doing to have that happen. We like the mushers secret too.

I'm not sure how/where/when it happened. I noticed he wasn't putting much pressure on his foot, so I checked it out and found it not looking too pretty.

I hope Oreo's back jumping and leaping soon!

Catching up from this weekend...
I'm a fan of the Control Unleashed exercises/philosophy. I don't think this really applies to agility but..I tend to treat Kona a ton whenever something scary shows up. (We can't always play the look at that game because she's often too scared) My thinking is to change the association of the trigger with something positive. Even if Kona can take treats from me, she's always stressed when a trigger shows up, so I'm sure some will say that I'm just reinforcing her stress by giving her treats.

but...A cool thing thats started happening the past month is Kona will see a trigger, stress and stare at it while it's in view, and then immediately look back at me for treats when it's gone. On one hand, she's still afraid of the trigger, but she has to bounce back quickly enough to want to look at me for food afterward. Before this, once the trigger was out of view, her stress levels would be so high that she would go into flight mode to try and find a safe place.

This has happened after months and months of training, but if it can happen, I'm hopeful that she'll make the next step of associating the trigger with something good.

If Oreo is similar to Kona with his fear, it may be hard for him to be trained to ignore people when he still thinks they're scary. As one of your readers said, it may be better to go back to basics and work on the fear outside of the ring.

I'm learning as I go with my pup, so it's certainly a bit of trial and error! Keep us posted with what you decide to try and how it goes!
